it's about 3 weeks. House mice breed throughout the year and can become pregnant within 48 hours of producing a litter. There are usually about 6 mice to a litter and females may produce as many as ten litters (about 50 young) per year. It takes 21 to 23 days for gestation and 35 days for a mouse to mature.

The discovery of the magnetic compass was an event of GREAT importance in the history of people. It was the first documented instrument created by mankind that could be read using a precise scale. Of course the sundial had been around for a long time, but it doesn't move [just it's shadow does as you know]. There was the wind vane, but no precise way at that time to measure wind direction. If you think about it, it's pretty hard to measure direction in general, without a compass. The earliest known compass surfaced in China by at least the first century A.D. It apparently didn't arrive in Europe until the twelfth century A.D [1100's]

She was my 17 year old Wiemeraner. She passed away Tuesday Dec. 5th 2007, we'll miss her so much.

The Weimaraner's written history begins around 1880, when this breed was first exhibited at a Berlin, Germany dog show, where they were referred to as "l'mongrels".
The Grand Duke Karl August of Weimar (Germany), wanted to develop a multipurpose dog. It's nickname is the "Gray Ghost"; this comes from not only the Weimaraner's color, but also its ability to be quick, using an almost cat-like stealth while in the field, combined with a silent, almost shadow-like way of working.

After World War II ended, many soldiers brought home stories of this wonderful, strangely colored dog known as the Weimaraner. As people heard of these stories many wanted this new Wonder Dog.

Within six months a Weimaraner will go from a 3 pound puppy to a 70 pound dog with a mind of its own. It is not a plaything, nor should ownership be frivalous. Without proper training and socialization, this dog can become a neurotic, problem dog and almost impossible to manage. With hard work and love you will rewarded with an incredible companion.

You must be wondering about the benefits of eating fruits... well aren't you?

<p.Here are several reasons:

Water is most necessary for human body and fruit is the only natural food that consists of 80% of water. No other food can meet the water requirement for the human body like fruit does.

In this junk food dominated society, fruit is the only natural food that contains less bad-cholesterol.

Fruits are the ultimate stimulating factor for your brain. Itsbe the fuel for the noggin'. If you want to enhance your memory power, you should consume fruit regularly.

Fiber, fiber and more fiber - nothing else satisfies the fiber requirement for your body easier than fruit. It helps you fight high blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease.

From 2 loyal listeners who helped with todays trivia

Man, I've had a Mostly Trivial orgy today. ÂI've been listening to your
show for a couple of weeks, and downloaded all the previous episodes
over the weekend. ÂToday, I listened to all but about 6 episodes. ÂI
LOVE your show! ÂNot only do you have great trivia, but it's the
best-sounding podcast I've heard since I started listening to podcasts
about a month ago when I bought my first iPod. ÂI particularly enjoyed
the "Chuck E. Cheese Hell" song on the Coin-op video game episode.
Anyway, I had an idea for a show. ÂTrivia about Mostly Trivial.

We at the Step Out Of Your Shell Podcast love your show, we've downloaded all of them!
Â
Thanks and keep up the great work.

Where do thes words come from

Some folks âsleep like a topâ when they go to bed. Do you know where this comes from?

Long before the days of high-tech toys and the Internet, a favorite child's toy was a spinning top. To set the top spinning, you wound the string round the shaft, balanced the top carefully upright, and pulled the string with all your might. At maximum spin, the top can appear to be perfectly still, or âsleepingâ. Incidentally; to âsleep like a logâ has nothing to do with waking up in the fireplace, rather the sound of heavy snoring being likened to that of sawing.â

MostTriv #111 Bubble Gum

Bubblicious!

For better or ill, I sat on a stump, And was stuck by a lump, Of gum on my rump...And am sitting there still.

Pop goes the Bubble Gum!

For 12 years, the selling, importing, manufacturing and chewing of gum was illegal in Singapore. The ban was lifted in 2004 - - but the chewy stuff can only be bought at pharmacies. Customers must give their names and show an identity card before receiving their gum. Pharmacists who donât follow these rules can be jailed for up to two years and fined $4,700!

In some parts of the world, especially the South China Seas, piracy still exists today.

Why?

The common misconception among citizens is that personal use quantities of chewing gum are allowed into Singapore. However, according to the set of Regulations, "importing" means to "bring or cause to be brought into Singapore by land, water or air from any place which is outside Singapore ..." any goods, even if they are not for purposes of trade. The set of Regulations also does not make any provisions for personal use quantities to be brought into Singapore. Therefore, bringing chewing gum into Singapore, even small quantities for whatever purpose, is technically prohibited.

Whisky, one of the worldâs largest spirits, has a history of its own. The name âwhiskyâ itself is a variant on the phrase âwater of lifeâ indicting spirits. This word, in various spellings, is found today in some Scandinavian countries, and the French eau-de-vie translates in the same way. Rendered in Irish and Scottish Gaelic, the term becomes uisge beatha [pronounced "ooshkie bayha"] or usquebaugh among other spellings. It eventually was mangled into the half anglicized whisky.Â

Stanley Kubrick worked for several months with effects technicians to come up with a convincing effect for the floating pen in the shuttle sequence.

The term 'poolroom' now means a place where billiards is played, but in the 19th century a poolroom was a betting parlor for horse racing. Billiard tables were installed so patrons could pass the time between races. The game of billiards and the poolroom became connected in the public's mind. Today, the two terms are used interchangeably.

The Tears of Meng Jiang Nu" is a great Chinese folktale related to the wall. The husband of the beautiful Meng was taken from her by the first emperor (Qin) to work on the wall. She trekked countless miles to find him. She finally succeeded, but he had just died. She began crying and her tears were so great that a storm raised up and destroyed several miles of the wall. Upon hearing what happened, the emperor traveled to met her. He was so struck by her beauty that he proposed to her and she reluctantly accepted. They attended her husband's funeral high on a mountainside and she finally stopped crying. Then, according to the tale, what happened?

Hey, Listen to THIS!

I was just having fun yelling at you :-)

Pete Townshend on iPods

âWho guitarist Pete Townshend is warning iPod users they may face hearing loss if they pump up the volume on the devices.

âTownshend, 60, said his hearing was irreversibly damaged from using studio headphones, and he now takes 36-hour breaks between recording sessions. The band was known for loud performances.
â "Hearing loss is a terrible thing because it cannot be repaired," Townshend said on his website. "If you use an iPod or anything like it, or your child uses one, you may be OK. But my intuition tells me there is terrible trouble ahead."

Explaination on one of the questions in this show:

Water vapor in the air increases this speed slightly. Sound travels faster through warm air than through cold air. This is to be expected because the faster-moving molecules in warm air bump into each other more often and therefore transmit a pulse in less time. For each degree rise in temperature above 0 degrees C, the speed of sound in air increases by 0.6 meters per second. In water, sound travels about four times as fast as it does in air, while in steel, the speed of sound is about fifteen times as great as in air.

What do you know, Joe?

Why do people often experience ringing in the ears after a loud music concert?

A. Some cilia in the ear have been destroyed and are "dying".â
B. The hammer, anvil and stirrup are still sending electrical waves to the brain. â
C. The brain is still processing subtle vibrations of the cilia.

D. The pinna is still funneling trapped sound waves.

Some Do's and Don'ts on Feeding the Birds ( I love to feed the Birds out on our deck!)

A hanging feeder with sunflower seeds will attract numerous birds, but don't forget a suet feeder for the woodpeckers, nuthatches, titmice and chickadees, and a ground or tray-type feeder with cracked corn or mixed seed for cardinals, doves, juncos, sparrows and others that prefer feeding from the ground.

Water is a great attraction for birds, even in winter. A heating element for birdbaths will prevent freezing.

Placing a feeder near shrubs or other shelters will make birds feel safer. Ground feeders should be near cover such as a brush pile. A fence around the ground feeder may be necessary if cats begin hiding in the nearby cover.

Fruit of the Carob.
The carat is a unit of mass used for gems, and equals 200 milligrams or 3.086 grains. The word derives from the Greek keration (fruit of the carob), via Arabic and Italian. Carob seeds were used as weights on precision scales because of their reputation for having a uniform weight; a 2006 study found this to not be the case; carob seeds have as much variation in their weights as other seeds. In the distant past, different countries each had their own carat, roughly equivalent to a carob seed.

Its origin is in dispute, but it dates back to about 1862.
The Martini's popularity has waxed and waned, and its recipe has changed considerably over the years. Going from an original mixture that contained more Vermouth than Gin garnished with a lemon twist, to 2 to 1 gin and vermouth, to a 15 to 1 mixture, and finally straight chilled Gin.

There is also the Vodka Martini, but not as exciting. Standard Martini garnish is an olive, garnish it with a pearl onion and it is called a Gibson, my personal favorite!

Another popular but fabricated story of the yo-yo is that of a centuries old Filipino weapon. The story is about an assailant in a tree with a heavy oversized yo-yo waiting for a victim to pass below. At the critical moment the yo-yo would be hurled at the victimâs head presumably rendering him unconscious. A near miss would still allow the assailant a second opportunity.
Physics of the yo-yo make the story improbable. Although there is no question that the toy existed in the Philippines for centuries, as a popular toy, there is no documented evidence that it was ever used as a jungle weapon. The story was popularized by Duncan yo-yo demonstrators in the â30s, many of whom were from the Philippines. It was a great story and helped to sell yo-yos, but it has been repeated so often that it has become an urban legend.

Although the Mickey Mouse Club TV series premiered on October 3, 1955, the Mouseketeers made their first television appearance on July 17, 1955 - on the ABC broadcast special celebrating the opening of Disneyland.ââWalt Disney was adamant that the Mouseketeers be regular kids, not actors. Producers searched schools looking for kids with that special spark.Â
ââThe Mousketeers went to school 5 days a week on the Disney lot. Not only did they work 6 days but Sundays were often spent performing for the public. Being a Mousketeer wasn't easy. Â
ââThe Mousketeers became close friends and remain so to this day. Sadly, the show only ran for 3 years and 360 episodes. ABC wanted to run more ads and Walt Disney refused. His contract forbid him from shopping the show to another network.Â
ââJimmy Dodd died in 1964 at the too young age of 54. Roy Williams died in 1976.

Whats real on TV anyway?

Critics say that the term "reality television" is somewhat of a misnomer and that such shows frequently portray a modified and highly influenced form of reality, with participants put in exotic locations or abnormal situations, sometimes coached to act in certain ways by off-screen handlers, and with events on screen manipulated through editing and other post-production techniques.Â

Why are albatrosses so vulnerable?
Albatrosses are exceptionally susceptible to longlining. They can't breed fast enough to cope with the rate at which they are being killed. Other species, with different life cycles, might be able to survive. Why is this so?

Naturally, albatrosses are long-lived birds, some living up to 60 years.

They only breed once they are fully mature - this can take as long as 12 years.

They only produce one chick at a time, and several albatross species only breed every second year.

The South Beach Diet is a one-size-fits-all diet that completely ignores the fact that we have different genetic requirements for optimal health ... one-size-fits-all diets never work for all, or even close to all.

So much trivia on this I think I'll do a part 2!

The final list of the Seven Wonders was compiled during the Middle Ages. The list comprised the seven most impressive monuments of the Ancient World, some of which barely survived to the Middle Ages.
Others did not even co-exist. Among the oldest references to the canonical list are the engravings by the Dutch artist Maerten van Heemskerck (1498-1574), and Johann Fischer von Erlach's History of Architecture.
